I believe it should be fully integrated in GeoServer. Try out the latest stable release, json should be listed in the capabilities document as an output format that you can call. And for 1.7.3+ you can even put a callback parameter, see http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-1411

Hello,
What is the status of this "plug-in"? I have been using it and GeoServer to mashup our data with GoogleMaps. I am hoping to find out if there is any continuing develoment of it.

Oh, and if you want to test the output without downloading and installing GeoServer, you can try it out at http://sigma.openplans.org:8080/geoserver/wfs?request=GetCapabilities

A sample request is http://sigma.openplans.org:8080/geoserver/wfs?request=GetFeature&typename=gnis_pop&outputformat=json&maxfeatures=10
